Here is the best way to prep and use AFM RoofGuard on your RV's Aluminum Roof (as explained by AFM's chief technical)
1. Clean the Roof Thoroughly
Dirt, grease, and chalky oxidation must be completely removed. Use a stiff-bristle broom and a heavy-duty, metal-safe detergent. Rinse thoroughly and allow the aluminum to dry completely.
2. Scuff the Surface
For bare or heavily oxidized aluminum, lightly scuffing the surface with a scrub pad or using a power washer can mechanically "key" the metal, creating a rougher surface for the coating to grip onto.
3. Apply a Metal Primer - AFM MetalCoat Metal Primer
This is the most important step for long-term adhesion. You must apply a specialized exterior water-based or solvent-based metal primer designed to halt rust and promote adhesion on non-ferrous metals like aluminum.
4. Coat with Elastomeric - AFM RoofGuard
Once the primer has cured according to the manufacturer's instructions, apply your 100% acrylic elastomeric roof coating with an airless sprayer or a thick-nap roller. A two-coat system applied perpendicular to each other is strongly recommended.
