Yes, you can apply directly over the old finish. We recommend that you first remove any dirt, grime, tree sap, bird poop, etc. from the surface. You can also do a light sanding to open the pores better. Be careful not to sand heavily in any one area as that will absorb more stain then adjacent areas and end up looking darker.
Once dry, apply the PolyWhey Ext. Stain until the surface has a slight sheen. That might be 2 or even 3 coats. The sheen provides better protection and is easier to clean than a dull finish.
