Question: I used Safecoat Naturals clear penetrating oil to seal my new deck about five years ago. I'd like to reseal it - and I (foolishly) never sealed the underside. What is the best way to prepare the wood for reapplication? Do I have to sand, or can i use a power washer and a cleaning product such as Defy?
Answer: Basic requirements for applying the AFM Safecoat Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil are that the surface be clean and dry. Sanding would not be necessary since you are going over the same product that was once applied to the deck. That being said, this is not our usual recommendation for exterior wooden decks, simply because it does not hold up to Iowa weather conditions. We do have other products you may want to consider that would last longer, such as the Rubio Hybrid Exterior Wood Protector, Rubio DuroGrit, or Vermont Natural Coatings Polywhey Exterior Penetrating Stain. The Vermont Polywhey and Hybrid are both available in a clear / pure color that would have a very similar finished look to the Clear Penetrating Oil.
