If you want to maintain the stained wood appearance, do NOT use AFM SafeCoat Transitional Primer (Int/Ext), as this is an encapsulating primer that is white and non-transparent, so it will obscure the natural wood look.
Unfortunately, we do not carry any clear, non-toxic products that will effectively block VOC emissions from oil-based stains. If you have already applied a VOC-heavy oil-based stain, your best option is to use a product like Zinsser SealCoat Waxless Shellac (which does contain VOCs); this will bond to the stained surface and act as a base for an encapsulating clear coat. After the shellac has cured, you can apply a clear finish such as water-based AFM Polyureseal BP to encapsulate both the stain and the shellac.
If you have not yet applied your VOC heavy stain, we do offer multiple low- or zero-VOC clear stains and finishes.
