We’ve provided several answers to questions related to Hardwood Floor Finishes , see some other helpful Q&A related to this product.
Question: Have a mobile home with mdf flooring throughout. Best sealer, mold resistant, waterproof, encapsulation, formaldehyde blocker?
Answer: AFM Safe Seal was designed specifically to handle almost all of your expectations. The only one that can't be guaranteed is the waterproof feature. The sealer will certainly help to make the MDF more moisture resistant, but waterproof is a tall order. Sealing the surface makes it much harder for moisture, mold and mildew to penetrate. We recommend 2-3 coats on all sides and edges. MDF is generally not used as a finished floor. If you are using it that way, then instead of the Safe Seal, we'd recommend our AFM Polyureseal BP which is a non-toxic polyurethane that will not only block formaldehyde and moisture, but it will provide a scratch resistant easy to clean surface as well. The AFM Safe Seal was not meant to be walked on.
Question: what size is a "sample" of safecoat sealant?
Answer: All our AFM Safecoat Liquid Samples are about 3 ounces.
Question: We have a subfloor made up of mdf and plywood. Which product should I use to seal it if installing vinyl plank flooring over it?
Answer: Yes, AFM SafeSeal is the correct product. We recommend at least two coats on all sides and edges. Pls allow one week to dry before applying any floor above it. Please be advised that controlling the formaldehyde emissions from the plywood or MDF will not help in controlling emissions from the vinyl plank flooring itself. We offer other types of flooring such as hardwood, cork, Marmoleum and bamboo that don't emit VOCs or formaldehyde. For more info, please speak to one of our eco-advisors at 800-405-0222 9-5PM CST.
Question: Is there any vapor barrier that would work over safecoat concrete paint?
Answer: The question here is really if you are trying to block off-gassing or to add a protective layer over the floor paint. Safe Seal is not meant for this application, because it is opaque and meant for surfaces that are behind the scenes and will remain slightly tacky after drying.AFM Safecoat Concrete Floor Paint does not require further top coats, but AFM Polyureseal EXT could be applied over top if you wanted to add moisture and abrasion resistance.
Question: Can I use this over start railing that was stained with an oil-based stain several years ago? How long is this product good for once it's been opened?
Answer: This is for indoor use only and cannot be used over oil-based stains or sealers as it will not bond well and may eventually peel off. The only solution for sealing off-gassing of oil-based stains is to use Zinsser's BIN shellac or our AFM Transitional Primer and 2 coats of AFM Zero VOC paint.
