The installation guide indicates the countertop will expand and contract, possibly up to 1/2 inch. Does that mean we should leave a gap between the edge of the countertop and a rigid structure such as a fixed wall? For a 36"x72" slab, would it expand in both directions equally or might it be less in say the long direction vs the short? Would the 1.5" thickness be prone to significant expansion as well?

Good question. Yes, you should leave room for expansion on the length and width. However, the thickness does not expand in any significant amount. One way to control the amount of expansion is by sealing all sides and edges. That means top and bottom equally either with our food grade natural oils or our clear water-based topical sealers. If you have further questions about this we recommend ordering samples to see how you like the finish. You may also call and speak to one of our eco-advisors for more details at 800-405-0222.
