Question: I live in south Florida high humidity. Is wool recommend for bedroom floors?
Answer: Sure. Wool is a natural fiber. It breathes, like all natural fibers. Unlike man-made carpets and rugs made from petroleum and oil-based products, wool does not react to heat and humidity like plastic products. Wool fiber can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without feeling damp. So, at times of high humidity, wool absorbs moisture and then releases this moisture again when the atmosphere is dry.
Question: is there something you need to do to protect from moths?
Answer: With a regular vacuuming program, including underneath furniture (sofas, beds, etc) and in the corners of closets, insect damage can be prevented or kept to a minimum. Answer: As of this writing this J Mish Sunburst carpet goes for $70.02 a square yard on our website. Going off the measurements you gave (12x14 + 12x20 rooms = 408 SF or 46 SY). 46 SY x $70.02 = $3,220.92. This does not include the closets (unless that square footage was included in your room dimensions).
Question: How well does this perform on stairs?
Answer: Sometimes looped carpet (such as this one) can show the backing when bent over your stairs (in the industry these are called "smile lines"). You should look for carpets that have a tighter weave, denser pile weight, or are in the cut-pile category. To narrow down your carpet options please take a look at the category filters listed on the left hand side of the wall to wall carpet main page. The "thickness", "carpet construction" and "pile height" filters will be especially helpful with your search. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/A... Once you have found a selection of carpets to your taste we recommend getting samples and testing those samples over the edge of your stairs or another 90 degree hard surface. This will give a more accurate representation of how the carpet will perform in your space. Eliminate those samples that exhibit "smile lines" aka when you can see all the way through the carpet to the backing material.
Question: Is this appropriate for stairs?
Answer: The best way to know, with any carpet, is to order a small sample online and test it. Bend it, as it would be bent going over a step, to see how it acts and appears. You'll always know best by seeing a sample in person as nothing appears on a computer screen as it does in person.
Question: how big are the samples?

Question: Does installation of wool carpet require glue or adhesives and if so do they contain VOCs?

Question: it looks like a flat weave; is it? i'm looking for very flat so that an office chair can roll on it without dents, which is what I have now.
Answer: It's tough to answer as we can't see or feel the carpet you have now as a point of comparison. Your best way to know is to order a small sample online. That way, you can see and feel it in person before making a purchase. That said, Softer than Sisal has a 3/16" pile height and a 42 oz face weight. For an office-type situation, you would want a 40 oz or higher face weight for durability. If you go to our category page for wall to wall carpet, you can narrow search results by applying filters (left hand side of the page is the list) "pile height" and "face/pile weight" are going to help you find what you need. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/A...

Answer: If you are wary of permethrin, check out our Earthweave or Nature's Carpet brand carpets, which contain zero permethrin. Most Unique Carpets contain permethrin. From their website: "Unique Wool Carpets use Permethrin and agents containing Permethrin as a moth resistant agent. It is not only environmentally-friendly, it is exceptionally effective and safe. Accepted world-wide and endorsed by the World Health Organization, it is also used to control insects on a variety of crops such as hops, cotton, fruit and vegetables. Permethrin is widely used in greenhouses, market gardens, and vineyards and is applied in a variety of ways.In regular use as described above, it has shown to be completely non-toxic to humans and, if ingested, passes through the system quickly and completely with no residual effects. However, when used as a moth resistant agent, Permethrin is used in much smaller quantities since it is not intended to control insects but rather as an agent that limits the ability of eggs to hatch or larvae to feed. It will not kill adult insects that walk across the carpet. There have been no reported cases worldwide of health related issues in humans from exposure to Permethrin." The following styles: Cascade Naturals, Sierra Naturals, Four Seasons, Softer Than Sisal Naturals, and Stratford use undyed, untreated English wool.

Question: Does J Mish make this carpet in brown? I have a sample from about a year ago that is a brown color, but I don't see it in your offerings. Any chance I could get the Alfa in brown?
Answer: The Alfa style color Brown got discontinued by the manufacturer in late 2019. As such it is no longer available for purchase.
Question: What is renewable wool? Does Alfa carpeting wear well? It seems to be fuzzy. Does it pill?
Answer: Thanks for your questions! To start with, Wool as a raw textile material is a 100% renewable resource due to the way it's produced. The wool coats of adult sheep are sheared once a year on average to obtain the raw wool material. The wool grows back naturally, and shearing is actually good for the sheep, because they do not shed. No one likes wearing a heavy winter coat in the summertime, well, no one I know anyway. An age old, and completely natural, renewable resource.Alfa carpeting wears very well, because the natural fibers in wool do not compress easily, and has a habit of springing back to its original shape after it's compressed. It resists traffic wear patterns over time unlike most conventional carpets. It's common that new wool carpeting appears "fuzzy" due to loose fibers from the milling process clinging to the finished material. Vacuuming of the carpet 2 times a week, in both directions, over the first year of ownership will remove the stray fibers. Just be careful not to use a vacuum with super-high suction and strong beater brushes, because that can actually lead to the issue in your last question, pilling. As far as problems with pilling, it's not any more prevalent in wool carpeting than in conventional carpet. Proper carpet care and cleaning according to manufacturer's guidelines should keep any occurrences of pilling to a minimum. If pilling does occur, some careful maintenance with scissors to trim back the pilled fibers is suggested. Never try to just pull out pilling fibers, as it can loosen the overall weave of the carpet.
Question: Do you use permethrin with Santorini?

Answer: Villanova has a total weight of 57oz per square yard.
Question: How does one protect from moths?
Answer: The best prevention against moth larvae eating wool carpet is with regular vacuuming; especially when moths lay their eggs in the Fall and then hatch in the Spring. Be sure to vacuum under couches and in dark areas such as closets. Just a few deep cleanings each year is all it takes.
Question: This carpet has a latex backing. Does it have off-gassing odors? I wanted the most natural and non-toxic carpet available (i.e. Earthweave), but it's way out of my budget. So, I'm considering JMish Alfa, but the synthetic latex backing makes me uneasy.
Answer: J Mish has no stain guards or pesticides sprayed on the surface but it does contain synthetic latex in the backing. There will be some odor for a while, but it usually subsides within a few weeks with good ventilation. Because everyone has different tolerances to latex, the only way to know for sure it is order some samples and test for yourself.
Question: Does this carpet hold up well? Does it show "paths" after a couple years? How does it clean?
Answer: Element has a 7 year warranty and is rated for Residential Heavy Duty. Obviously, if there is one traffic pattern that most in the household travel often, it will wear sooner in that traffic pattern. That will happen with any flooring. And here is their care and maintenance guide : https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c...

Question: I would like to order carpet for stairs. Can I order it pre cut?
Answer: The Lanai carpet is 158" wide. You will need to order a piece that wide by whatever length to a full square yard. Then the installer will need to cut the stair pieces from that. Unique Carpet will not cut the carpet lengthwise.
Question: I have three dogs and accidents happen. How does this carpet do with dog messes?
Answer: While wool is durable and naturally dirt and soil-resistant, it IS a carpet, and it's certainly by no stretch of the imagination dog proof. Over time, if stains and accidents are left to sit, these will stain and otherwise compromise your carpet. While no floor is dog-proof, a hard surface floor would be easier to clean and maintain than a carpet floor.

Question: What is the Green Label Plus certification number?
Answer: We reached out to Nature's Carpet and they had this to say."Our carpets don't currently hold CRI Green Label certificates, as we certify instead with the European GUT environmental standard. We previously certified with CRI, so we do know that our carpets meet all of those criteria, however, the GUT standard is even more stringent and we deem it to be a superior standard. If you are looking for more information on the GUT standard of testing, here is a link to their website: https://www.pro-dis.info/gut-testing.html?&no_cache=1&L=0 "
Question: Does the carpet need to be glued? And what is required besides just the carpet, i.e. padding, etc.
Answer: You will need a carpet installer to come measure your area so they can tell you what needs to be ordered for them to be able to install it. They will tell you how much pad and carpet to order. Either the Sponge Cushion Full House pad or the J Mish wool pad are able to be used as the pad under the Lanai carpet. You do not need to glue this down. You may order small samples online of any of these to see in person before ordering the final product. It is also a good idea to show your installer these samples so he or she will know exactly what they will be working with.
Question: How big is the sample?
Answer: The Unique Carpet sample sizes run approximately 5" x 5"
Question: Does this brand use mothproofing?
Answer: According to the manufacturer the Signature Collection (and all their collections) have not been treated for Moths. The Signature collection is also CRI + certified and is 100% wool from New Zealand and the USA. There are no heavy metals in their dyes and the backing is synthetic. If you are chemically sensitive and looking for something even purer, our EarthWeave and Nature's Carpet are the purest. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/A...
Question: But wait the backing is Polypropylene....I thought this was organic!?
Answer: Yes, polyproplylene is a petroleum-based by-product and yet, it is so safe that it is commonly used as air filters, bandages, and protective netting in hospitals. Unique Carpets are not made with organic ingredients. They are made with 100% wool with synthetic backing and adhesives that are considered safe. They are certainly safer than carpets made with synthetic fibers. If you prefer an all natural carpet with no synthetics, then please look at our Nature's Carpet and EarthWeave brands. These are the only two that use no moth protection, no stain guards, no synthetic dyes, only natural latex and a natural jute backing. They are the purest carpets with no off-gassing of any hazardous air pollutants. These two brands are the only ones we recommend to those with chemical sensitivities.
Question: What is the size of the sample?
Answer: The Unique Carpet sample sizes run approximately 5" x 5"
Question: Should a carpet pad be used?
Answer: Whenever you install wall to wall carpeting that isn't specifically only a glue down carpet (like indoor/outdoor carpet), you will want to use a pad such as the Full House pad or the J Mish wool pad. Pad not only gives comfort to the carpet, but it also gives longer life to the carpet itself. You may order small samples of each online to see and feel in person before purchasing the final rolls of pad to go under your lovely brand new carpet.
Question: How difficult is it to remove stains from this carpet?
Answer: Wool is a naturally soil and stain resistant fiber. Its fundamental structure is that of overlapping scales which keep dust and dirt near the surface of the pile, where it can easily be released by vacuuming. For peskier stains we recommend host cleaning service, more info here. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c...
Question: How would I naturally protect a wool carpet from pests?
Answer: The most common pest to a wool carpet would be moths and moth larvae. The best defense against moths and larvae is a clean home. Regular vacuuming of your entire carpet (especially in dark spaces under furniture), baseboards, and keeping carpet clean from food, spills, and pet accidents (which moths and other insects love) will keep your carpet pest free without getting into chemicals, fumigation, and other toxic cleaning options.
Question: Will you bind carpet?

Question: I read that this carpet was "moth-proof". How is this possible without insecticides?
Answer: Please share where you've seen that the carpet is listed as moth proof on our website. If you did see it, it was not intended or correct. EarthWeave takes pride in the fact that they use no additives to prevent moths. The best prevention against moth larvae eating wool carpet is with regular vacuuming; especially when moths lay their eggs in the Fall and they hatch in the Spring. Be sure to vacuum under couches and in dark areas such as closets. Just a few deep cleanings each year is all it takes.
Question: I have an old oreck vacuum, what kind of vacuum would recommend?
Answer: Per Unique Carpets: "An upright vacuum cleaner with rotating beater bar and brush or canister type are the most efficient cleaners. Do not use an overly stiff brush on the beater bar as this will cause excess fuzzing. The head of the vacuum should be adjusted so that the brushes just barely touch the face of the carpet. It is important to move the vacuum cleaner slowly to allow time to get the dirt out, and above all make sure that the dust bag is never more than half full.DO NOT USE A VACUUM THAT AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTS AS THIS WILL CAUSE EXCESS FUZZING.DO NOT USE ANY VACUUM MADE BY ORECK OR DYSON AS THESE WILL CAUSE EXCESS FUZZING. NO CLAIMS WILL BE ACCEPTED WHEN THESE VACUUMS ARE USED. Unique recommends the use of a Sanitaire vacuum (models SC888J, SC888K, SC688A). They are upright units with manually adjustable heads and bristles soft enough that they groom the carpet without damaging the individual fibers. " Green Building Supply does not sell or deal with vacuums.
Question: do you have installers?
Answer: We recommend www.cfiinstallers.org or www.homeadvisor.com. Customers are having good luck finding contractors with these websites. Also here is an article we wrote about How to Find the Right Contractor: https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/L...
Question: Can this be installed without a tack strip and without glue?
Answer: If you were to just lay the wall to wall carpet flat without tack strip or glue there are a few things that can occur. The carpet will move. It may bunch up and bubble in the middle of the room and curl up along the edges. It may shrink and recede from the walls and the edges to fray. The best solution, if you do not want to use tack strips or glue is to purchase an area rug. We can do Santorini as an area rug, it just would need to be special ordered. Give us a call at 888-302-6051 and we can talk about setting up an estimate for you.
Question: Is this appropriate for a stair?
Answer: J Mish Legends is a thick wool carpet that is better suited for a living, dining or bedroom. Normally a shorter carpet with tight dense weave is best. On the left hand margin of our website you can narrow your search by thickness and density.
Question: Do you make a carpet option that is suitable for a basement? It is for just a small area and the steps leading down.
Answer: Assuming that your basement has some moisture issues, we would recommend our Waterproof Cork. We don't carry any carpet that is suitable for damp environments. Our Waterproof Cork is perfect for below grade flooring. It's quiet, and warm - a perfect noise and thermal insulator. Also, cork is naturally soft making it comfortable to walk on.

Question: Can you tell me if this carpet is sprayed with or has any fire retardant on it? Also, does it have a spot resistant spray on it? I need 100% natural. Also, where does it ship from? I am very interested. Thank you, Nanette Knight
Answer: There is no fire retardant sprayed on the Unique Carpets as wool is inherently fire safe through its natural flame-retardant qualities. It is also easy to maintain as the lanolin that is naturally apart of wool makes the wool nonabsorbent, thus spills and soil are easily removed. The Unique Carpets ship from Riverside, California and usually takes around 2 weeks for the processing and shipping time assuming there is good stock of the color you'd like. We can check stock for you anytime, if you'd like to call into our main line 800-405-0222.

Question: Has anyone had a reaction (allergy) after putting in wool wall to wall carpeting? I'm allergic to wool sweaters. They make me sneeze and eyes water so not sure I could tolerate wool rugs. But want non toxic wall to wall as a replacement to existing carpets.
Answer: Some of our customers have reactions to wool sweaters or clothing but are able to tolerate our wool carpeting. Our best and safest wool carpeting is made by EarthWeave and Nature's Carpet (dark green collection). These have no moth protection or Scotch Guard sprayed on the surface; no toxic dyes, 100% virgin wool, natural latex instead of synthetic and jute on the backing instead of polyester. They do not off-gas any hazardous air pollutants. They can be made into area rugs as well. The best way to know for sure is to purchase a few samples from our website, put them on the floor and walk on them to see if you react.

Question: Hi, with all the wool carpet, what other costs should I expect, i.e. for underlayment on a concrete slab, or anything else? Also, any idea how it might hold up to cat scratches?
Answer: If your concrete slab has not been sealed, it would be best to seal it with a highly durable GBS Penetrating Concrete Sealer to prevent any water from coming up through the slab or the walls. In addition, we carry both rubber and wool pads which range between $.80 - $1.75/sf depending on the material and thickness that you choose.Regarding cat scratches: our cat loving friends tell us that cut pile carpet does the best as they get caught in loop piles and berbers.
Question: How good is wool carpet if you have a dog?
Answer: It greatly depends on the behavior of the dog. If there are not issues with the dog having accidents, then a carpet may not be a problem. Pet accidents on any type of carpet can become an issue to remove stains and odors that can develop from the highly acidic bodily fluids. We do carry these two cleaners that can help with accidents and spills on wool carpet but if the dog is very prone to accidents, a hard surface floor may be a better fit for your pet and home to live harmoniously.

Unique Carpets has so many styles I wanted to double check on the Contessa.
