We’ve provided several answers to questions related to Adhesives and Underlayment , see some other helpful Q&A related to this product.
Question: What is the difference between the Moisture Block Pro and the Moisture Block? Can I use the two products interchangeably?
Answer: The Moisture Block is 100 sf and the Moisture Block Pro is 175 sf. Otherwise, they are the same product.
Question: Do I need moisture block under Marmoleum click when installing over wood subfloor in bathrooms?
Answer: When installing Marmoleum Click Cinch Loc Seal on a wood subfloor, no vapor barrier is required. However, if you wanted a vapor barrier as an option, you would use QuietWalk Plus because this underlayment offers the only real system for wicking moisture away from the floor. While Moisture Block can be used when installing Marmoleum Click over concrete, it should not be used over a wood subfloor.
Question: I'm building a sauna and want a vapor barrier that does not out gas. Would your product work at temps not to exceed 175 F?Thx. Marti
Answer: It is not recommended for use in a sauna.
Question: On the sample for Moisture Block it says "It is recommended to also install a moisture resistant film over concrete or any substrate where moisture is a concern." So does that mean an additional plastic film along with the Moisture Block? Trying to understand what to do on a concrete basement floor under waterproof cork (interlock, no glue).
Answer: Not necessarily. In most instances Moisture Block is enough. There will be times when additional moisture protection may be required. This can vary widely in certain parts of the country and during certain times of the year. Therefore, it's necessary to measure and keep records of the relative humidity of the subfloor and the ambient air before, during, and after installation. Please see the installation guidelines of your flooring on our website, which will spell out exactly in what situations you need to use a moisture barrier or not.
Question: We are planning to install this under floating cork on top of an unsealed concrete basement floor. I understand this will protect the cork from moisture damage...however, is it possible that mold will grow between the plastic vapor barrier and the concrete? Thanks.
Answer: Yes, it is possible, although not very likely. At least it will not affect your flooring and will not expose anyone in the room. If you don't use a vapor barrier, the moisture emissions will be absorbed into the bottom of the floor and potentially cause cupping and damage your floor. The manufacturer will not warrant their flooring without it.
Question: Can I install MP Global Moisture Block directly on a concrete slab and your Quiet Walk Plus without microbials over it with laminate planks on top?
Answer: A lot depends on the installation instructions for the laminate planks you are installing. Having moisture block (a vapor barrier) under Quiet Walk Plus (which contains a vapor barrier) seems like overkill, but I don't know what the laminate plank instructions are asking for.
Question: You mentioned Moisture Block as being good for small rooms. My living room is 17 by 30, and I will be using the click waterproof cork. Will the Moisture Block work? Thanks.
Answer: Moisture Block is required ONLY for concrete subfloors. Wooden/Plywood subfloors do not require any moisture barrier (unless it is over a crawl space without any insulation or vapor barrier beneath). The waterproof cork installation guidelines go into more detail. Question: Will this waterproof a bathroom floor when used under Marmoleum Click tiles?
Answer: No. It does not make it waterproof. Moisture Block is solely a convenient and effective vapor/moisture barrier.
Question: Does this product tear easily?
Answer: No, it does not.
Question: PS Dos this product offgas any VOCs or exempt VOCs?
Answer: Moisture Block has Zero VOCs and Zero exempt VOCs and Zero SVOCs.
Question: Sounds great but can I special order this product larger than 100 sq feet?
Answer: This product is only made in rolls of 100 sf. If you need more, you will need to buy multiple rolls as they do not make then in varying sizes and will not do special orders.
Question: We are buying a zinus mattress for our camper, our bed is a slide out and people are having mold form underneath their mattress, would this work as a moisture barrier?
Answer: Part of the reason mold is forming underneath a mattress is because there is no air flow to dry out the moisture. A plastic vapor barrier will protect the mattress from mold but will not prevent mold from growing underneath it. You can seal the slide out frame with our Caliwel mold inhibiting paint. That will not only kill mold and mildew but will prevent it from growing for at least 6 years.
Question: Do I use this with quiet walk or do I just use quiet walk on a second and third floor installation?
Answer: QuietWalk Plus has a vapor barrier built into it so it does not require another vapor barrier.
Question: What material is this product made of?
Answer: This product is made of 6ml polyethylene plastic. It is zero VOC, non-toxic and has no odor.
Question: Would this work instead of tar paper for barrier between rafters and a tin roof?
Answer: Moisture Block would not work with roofs. Moisture Block is a vapor barrier for floating floors only, introducing any kind of nail would compromise the vapor barrier. We do carry roofing underlayment for this job. Check out EcoStar Aqua Guard Roofing Underlayment and EcoStar Glacier Guard.
Question: Can this be used to cover dirt wall in old basement?
Answer: Moisture Block is made to block moisture intrusion from concrete or wooden subfloors. We cannot say how this might work for a wall.
Question: I need to build up a concrete garage floor can't afford cement can this work under tile?
Answer: The MP Global Moisture Block is 6ml thick and is paper thin. It will not affect the height of your floor. if you can't afford concrete, 1/4" or 1/8" cork can be used as an underlayment beneath ceramic tile. The tile can be thinset directly over the cork. Rolls come in 200 SF only and can be shipped via UPS ground. See attached.
Question: Can I use MP Global Moisture block in my bathroom under the cement board for tiling?
Answer: MP Global Moisture block was designed as a vapor barrier beneath most floating engineered floors. You will need to check with your tile installer or cement board manufacturer to see what they recommend. We've never heard of this type of application before.
Question: how much is the overlap?
Answer: The attached adhesive strip makes for a 2 inch overlap.
Question: am in a new build and upstairs has chipboard flooring (particle board) which is full of VOCS. Is there anything I can do to make it less toxic prior to laying hardwood floorboards? thanks
Answer: AFM Safecoat Safe Seal is particularly effective at sealing in formaldehyde and other VOCs from composite wood such as plywood, particle board and pressed wood. As long as it's being used on surfaces that aren't exposed, which yours will not be, this is the product for you.
Question: Hello, I have extreme multiple chemical SENSITIVITY. I need a vapor barrier membrane for my dirt floor crawl space. It needs to be free of formaldehyde, bleach, petroleum free, so the smell doesn't come up into home. Also need chemical free spray foam too or something to seal under floor joists. Crawl space is 3 feet high.Do you have a shellac that would not crack to cover a wood floor?
Answer: Our Moisture Block is a 6ml zero VOC polyethylene vapor barrier 3' wide x 35' long, designed for beneath floating floors. Normal barriers for crawl spaces are thicker and larger. Ours can be used if you double it up and tape it all together. No tape is required as the white tear off strip exposes adhesive that allows one layer to bond to the next.Sorry, we know of no spray foam that is safe. All have nasty and highly questionable hazardous air pollutants. Try cotton or wool batts. We offer a non-toxic polyurethane that is low VOC but the floor and subfloor must be stable and non-moving. Cracking usually occurs from expansion and contraction resulting from the movement of the subfloor in climates that alternate between humid and dry. We don't carry shellacs because we have not found any that are non-toxic. Most contain solvents with high VOC emissions.
Question: Is moisture block necessary when installing click over plywood? Also, does click require an adhesive?
Answer: Moisture Block is recommended whenever you are installing a floating floor at or below grade whether your subfloor is plywood or concrete. The click floating installation does not require adhesive however occasionally it is desirable to use a small amount of an adhesive in the joint in tricky spots, for instance in a doorway or closet or other area where it might be difficult to fully click the floor together or where additional support is needed. The adhesive I would recommend for that is Kahrs Landobond.
Question: Is the MP Global Moisture Block what you recommend for under cork flooring on concrete?
Answer: The Moisture Block would be a fine selection for under the cork floor. If you wanted further protection from moisture, you could always use our Green Building Supply Penetrating Concrete Sealer prior to installation. From an underlayment perspective, the Moisture Block is the right choice!
