how can this be environmentally friendly when it comes in a plastic tube in lieu of cardboard?

The product itself is eco-friendly as it has very low VOC, is not hazardous to humans or the environment. It is a synthetic product as are all caulks and sealants. The plastic tube is probably made of recycled content like most cardboard. I've yet to see any caulk made in a cardboard tube.
