Perhaps. It all depends upon whether you purchase an attic fan that is large enough to move the hot air out of the attic. These are not like whole house fans that extract huge amounts of air quickly. This is slow, gradual and very quiet. Attic fans reduce the temperature in attics by 10-20% which is 8-15 degrees. That may or may not be noticeable on the first floor. If the temperature rises during the day faster than the fans can remove it, you may not notice much at all. The purpose of these fans is to reduce the temperatures in the attic as well as reduce the demand on air conditioning. It will also help control mold and mildew and preserve the wood in your attic. They are not supposed to cool the air as well as an air conditioner would but they definitely reduce the need for as much air conditioning which saves money.
