Polypropylene backing is one of the most commonly used backings for carpet because it does not stretch out and is highly durable and long lasting. And yes, it is a petroleum based product. However, the carpet is 100% wool and is better than synthetic fibers. Most can tolerate it. We rate it a 7. However, if your looking for a completely pure product, then check out our Earthweave, Nature's Carpet or Kaleen Pure Life carpets and you will find no synthetic ingredients at all. We rate them a 10 on the safety scale. And don't forget the pad. We offer a 100% wool pad as well.
