Why Do You Need To Prime Before Painting?
Priming will make your job look better and last longer. It will also be less expensive because it will reduce the number of paint coats needed. This is especially true when you are trying to cover a dark colored surface with a light colored paint.
What Is Their Function?
On new drywall or freshly patched walls, primers will smooth the gaps so that the paint can be applied evenly. Without primer, the paint might be absorbed into part of the wall in different degrees creating an uneven look. This may require several more coats, which still may not cure the problem because the chemicals in paint are not designed to fill gaps. Primers also block out stains and prevent certain chemicals from bleeding through to the top coat.
Each manufacturer makes primers designed specifically for its own paint or finish. There are water based primers for new drywall, wood, and metal and there are oil based primers for oil based products.
Water-based Primers
AFM Safecoat New Wallboard Primecoat HPV: Our premium water-based primer for new drywall and walls that have been repaired. Equalizes the porosity of the materials on the wall, so that finish paint absorbs evenly.
AFM Safecoat Transitional Primer: A unique, non-toxic formula that solves many problems by preparing a suitable surface for transitioning from existing old oil based paints, stains, or finishes to water-based coatings. Particularly effective as a stain blocker for knot holes, water and oil soluble stains, tannins, and terpines in wood which can bleed through to the surface of most traditional primers.
AFM Metalcoat Acrylic Metal Primer: A thermoplastic acrylic emulsion primer fortified with rust inhibiting pigments. Designed for use on non-ferrous or galvanized metal, iron, steel, aluminum, and masonry. It is not suitable for copper. Provides outstanding corrosion resistance and adhesion and may be used for interior or exterior use, including marine atmospheres.
BioShield Clay Primer: For use as a primer/undercoater for BioShield Clay Plaster when applied to plasterboard (drywall), concrete, firm paint coats, particle board, and other smooth surfaces.
Oil-based Primers
BioShield Primer Oil: A deep penetrating oil that creates an elastic, breathable, wood and wood grain enhancing surface. It can be applied both indoors and outdoors prior to a variety of sealers . |
