If you like walking barefoot in your home, you'll love natural cork flooring. Why?  Because cork flooring feels warm and soft to the feet. It's quiet, clean surface is also very durable. And it's formaldehyde free!    Chemical Composition   Antimicrobial

Unlike cold hard tile, vinyl or laminates, cork is firm but not bouncy. If you drop a dish on it, the dish will not break, but will leave a small dent. Within a few hours the dent vanishes due to its incredible resiliancy. It's great in kitchens and playrooms. And, now with Jointshield moisture protection system technology, you never have to worry about spills.

Concerned about moisture? Cork is used in wine bottles and as fishing floats without becoming moldy.  In a famous home, Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, cork was used on the floors, on the walls, and inside the shower of several bathrooms.  See amazing photo here. This is the original bathroom created in the 1930's. There is no mold anywhere on the cork.

Cork flooring has come a long way since it was invented more than a hundred years ago. Today, cork flooring is much tougher, more attractive and easier to install. Properly cared for, a cork floor should last for decades. Prices are comparable to hardwood flooring.

What makes it so durable?  In the old days they used wax and oils. Today cork is manufactured with an exceptionally smooth surface and covered with multiple layers of UV cured acrylic which will withstand almost any abuse from kids or pets. It's so durable it's backed by a 15 year wear warranty.

What is the JointShield moisture protection? Most cork flooring on the market is subject to damage via mold and mildew especially in kitchens or basements where moisture can be high. Natural Cork floating floors now come standard with a permanent moisture protection that will protect the edges of your floor against possible spills and frequent moppings. This paraffin-oil based technology makes your cork floor completely sealed and watertight. The combination of JointShield impregnated joints and the high moisture resistant HDF core makes Natural Cork floating floors the most durable in the industry.

Can I install it myself?   The new floating floor click system comes prefinished and installs without glue. Almost anyone can install cork flooring flawlessly the first time. Because it's so easy and quick to install, you'll save hundreds or thousands of dollars on installation costs.

What makes cork so special? Here a few of its amazing qualities:

  • Highly compressible and resilient
  • Excellent thermal and sound insulator
  • Lightweight and bouyant
  • Warm to the touch
  • Natural fire retardant
  • Hypoallergenic and insect resistant
  • Stable in various temperature
  • Renewable resource

Read below for the incredible story about cork.

Where Does Cork Come From?
Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree which grows in the forests of Mediterranean countries. The largest concentration of plantations are found in Spain and Portugal. Cork trees are stripped of their bark every 9-14 years, the tree is never cut and the habitat remains undisturbed.

The bark was designed by Mother Nature specifically to protect the tree during its average 300-500 year lifespan.  Not only is the bark inherently fire retardant to protect the tree from forest fires, but it is also resistant to the extreme temperature changes prevailing in those regions, as well as resistant to more than 38 species of insects including the termite, and to the development of microbes.

The properties of cork are derived naturally from the structure and chemical composition of the inner cells. For example, each cubic centimeter of cork's honeycomb structure contains between 30 and 40 million cells!  It is this unique cellular structure that gives cork its innate characteristics.

Cork has been used as bottle stoppers, floats for fishing nets and sandal soles for more than 100 years.  In 1891 an American, John Smith, discovered that it was possible to produce agglomerated cork, opening a new range of applications such as wall tile, flooring, and underlayment, for this versatile material.

Cork floors have been popular in Europe since the turn of the 20th century and can be found in many prestigious locations such as the Library of Congress, the Mayo Clinic and Plummer Building, the offices of several Fortune 500 companies, several churches and museums, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Fallingwater residence in Western Pennsylvania, designed in 1937. Recently, with improved technology an array of new patterns and colors have become available to meet the demands of today's design trends.

Warm and Quiet--Thermal and Acoustic Insulator:  Because of its density and incredible number of cells per inch, cork naturally inhibits the the conduction of temperature and sound. Cork floors reduce impact noise, a great asset for applications between floors. Noisy neighbors can be reduced significantly with cork flooring or with cork wall tiles.  Walking barefoot in your bedroom or bathroom in the middle of a cold night could now become a pleasant experience.

Comfortable--Resilient and Elastic: Cork provides a comfortable cushion underfoot as it gives under compression. Cork "bounces back" to its original shape, so recovery from marks left by furniture will leave a minimal residual indentation, less noticeable than on wood, carpet, or vinyl floors.

Impervious--Antimicrobial and Insect Repellent: Suberin, the inherent substance of cork, is a natural insect repellent. Even termites are unwelcome. Cork is also antimicrobial and is resistant to mold and mildew. If allergies are a problem, cork is the ideal alternative to carpet. Cork does not absorb dust and consequently does not cause allergies.

Safe--Fire Retarding Properties: A natural fire retardant, cork does not spread flames and does not release toxic gases during combustion.

Easy to Maintain--Durable: The presence of Suberin, a natural waxy substance, renders cork impervious to both liquids and gases. As a result, it does not rot and therefore may be considered the best seal available.  Cork is remarkably resistant to wear, as it is less affected by impact and friction that other hard surfaces because of its cellular composition.

In addition, Natural Cork Floors are protected with 5 coats of durable U.V. cured acrylic finish. However for demanding applications such as kitchens and bathrooms or if you just want additional protection, we recommend sealing the floor with an additional coat of polyurethane. This application will prevent dirt and moisture from accumulating in the joints. Only sweeping and damp moping are required for regular maintenance. When starting to show signs of wear, a new coat of polyurethane will rejuvenate the floor. A well maintained cork floor will last for decades.
