Bamboo Plywood
|
|
Woodworker's Dream
|
| |
|
Bamboo plywood is made of solid bamboo with a look and feel unlike any other plywood you have ever worked with. However, it cuts, sands, stains and routers just like wood. Sustainably harvested and totally renewable, our bamboo plywood is non-toxic with ultra low levels of formaldehyde.
Bamboo plywood is much stiffer and stronger than normal plywood. It can be used for countertops, shelving, cabinetry, desks, cutting boards and much more.

Teragren Plywood Paneling and Veneer
|
|

This panel style is manufactured using moisture balanced three-ply construction with a vertical core and cross-laminated outer layers. The functional, decorative design feature of the core eliminates the need for edge-banding.

This panel can be adhered to any substrate and edge banded with a variety of materials.
Teragren coordinating bamboo edge-banding available in 7/8" x 500' rolls.
Color: Natural (N) or Caramelized (C)
Grain: Flat Grain (FG) or Vertical Grain (VG)
Finish: Prefinished (PF) or Unfinished (UF)

- Bamboo Specie: Phyllostachys Pubescens (common name: Moso) harvested at maturity at 5-1/2 years for maximum stability and hardness.
- Adhesive: The adhesive specified in manufacturing Teragren bamboo panels and veneer consists of 0.0155 ppm of formaldehyde, 48 times lower than OSHA standards allow, 6.56 times lower than German E-1 standards, and 3.22 times lower than California standards.
- Formaldehyde Emissions: ASTM E 1333: 0.0155 ppm average
- LEED™ Credits: Teragren panels and veneer contribute to certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED™ (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating system: MR Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable Materials and IEQ Credit 4: Low-Emitting Materials.
- Moisture Content: ASTM D 4442, Oven Dry Method; 7.8 percent average.
- Hardness: ASTM D 1037, Janka Ball: Minimum 1939 lbs.
- Smoke Density: ASTM E 622 where passing is 450 or less, untreated bamboo panels pass with a 45 rating in flaming mode and a 370 rating with fire retardant-treatment
- Flammability: ASTM E 84: Panels received a Class 2 rating according to SGS-US testing when coated with NCFR-100 1XC clear varnish fire retardant. This applies to wall and ceiling coverings; panels received a Class 3 rating untreated.
- Static Bending: ASTM D 3043 Method D: Avg.thickness .761", Avg. density 65.1 lbs/ft3, Avg.perpendicular MOR (psi)/MOE 103 psi) 8,091/520, Avg. parallel MOR (psi)/MOE (103 psi) 13,056/1,451
- Screw Holding (Face & Edge): ASTM D 1037 in lbf: Face avg. 410, end grain edge 733, side grain edge 391
- Dimensional Stability AR/50/90 ASTM D 1037: 90% RH: Avg. perpendicular linear expansion .063%, Avg. parallel linear expansion .086%, Avg. perpendicular thickness swell .746%, Avg. parallel thickness swell 1.061%.
How to Store Bamboo Plywood: Plywood must be kept in its packaging until you are ready to work with it. The end grain of bamboo is large and porous and absorbs moisture very quickly. Therefore, it may tend to warp unless you lay it flat during storage and keep the ends well protected. Do not stand upright; it's best to lay flat. Once it is sealed it will look and function beautifully for a long time.
How to Finish Bamboo Plywood: Bamboo plywood is mostly unfinished, although we do carry one size that is prefinished. We recommend either oil based finishes (AFM Safecoat Oil Wax or Bioshield Hard Oil) or polyurethane (AFM Polyureseal BP). Either of these will provide a beautiful hard finish that will seal the wood and provide years of protection. Oil based products require yearly maintenance, however they do provide a beautiful feel. Should you want more scratch resistance, and less maintenance, our non-toxic polyurethane would be a good choice.
Tips on Working with Bamboo Plywood: Due to its hardness, you may find it usefull to predrill before fastening. Also, should you decide to router the edges of the natural colored plywood you may find some darkening. Plywood glues up and sands very nicely. However, do not start with coarse grit abrasives. It will shred the fibers. Start with 80 -100 grit and proceed to much finer grits. If you want a super smooth finish, we have found the 300+ grit aluminum oxide type sandpaper to work well in between coats of the oil based products.
