Low VOC exterior penetrating stain sealer
Velvit Oil Cabin & Deck Finish is a semi-transparent deep-penetrating oil and resin finish that repels water, reduces warping and cracking, deters mold growth, and maintains the natural beauty of any wood outdoors. It's wonderful to work with because it's easy to apply; plus you can pick up where you last left off without any difference in appearance.
This finish is made with vegetable oils and low VOC solvents. Please note that this is the only product on the Green Building Supply website that contains any solvents. We carry it because nothing else penetrates into the wood as good as Velvit Oil. This is the key to its long-lasting performance.
NOTE: please order small 4 oz. samples to test for color and sensitivity.
Why we like it
We've tested this on our home for 10 years. It outlasts and outperforms most water-based sealers while still letting the beauty of the wood come through. We've yet to find anything better. One saturating coat will last 5-7 years on north and east sides. May need recoating on south and west in 2-4 years, depending on color of stain and intensity of sun. Darker colors resist UV the best.
While this product does have a slight odor during application, it fades within days. Not for indoor use.
Features & benefits
- Easy-to-use — apply with a brush, roller or rag; use two coats, wet on wet
- Multiple uses — exterior siding, logs, decks, lawn furniture, fences, trim, etc.
- Low odor, safe — VOC-compliant, lead free; no odor once cured
- Quick-drying — dries in 16 to 24 hours under most dry conditions with low humidity
- Protective — deep penetration of oil repels water, weather, wear and tear
- 12 colors + clear — semi-transparent; becomes darker with extra coats
Alert: For outdoor use only. Contains solvents, but dries very quickly within days. Please test before using.
CLEAN UP: Use mineral spirits, paint thinner, or brush cleaner. Try our Bioshield Citrus Thinner.
MAINTENANCE: To maintain finish and protection, apply as needed when weathering appears. On some new wood, excess moisture from inside the wood may be released over one or two year period, thus the wood will accept penetration of Velvit Cabin & Deck Finish. In this case, reapply CDF when porosity or weathering is evident. The coat system will give you adequate protection for many years. This will depend on climate, type and condition of wood.
DIRECTIONS: Apply VELVIT CABIN & DECK FINISH to a clean unpainted and unsealed surface. Allow wood to dry 2 or 3 days after it rains. Morning dew should be allowed to dry off a few hours before application, usually after 10:00 am. TEMPERATURE should be between 50 and 90 degrees. Apply in the shade, mix pigment thoroughly, stir often during application.
HANDLING PRECAUTIONS: WARNING: FLAMMABLE LIQUID - HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED - Contains a small amount of petroleum distillates with very low odor. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Use only with adequate ventilation. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Keep closure tight and upright to prevent leakage. Keep container closed when not in use. In case of spillage, absorb and dispose of in accordance with local applicable regulations.
FIRST AID: In case of skin contact, flush with plenty of water; for eyes, flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes and get medical attention. If exposed to high concentration of vapor, remove to fresh air. If swallowed, CALL A PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT induce vomiting.
