FranMar SoyGel, Paint and Urethane Remover
| Colors: | | |
Non-toxic industrial strength paint, epoxy, urethane stripper
Franmar SoyGel (also known as Soy-Gel or Soy Gel) is a specially formulated product designed to remove paints, acrylics, epoxies and enamels without the back-breaking work of sanding and chiseling. Franmar SoyGel is made with 100% American-grown soybeans and is safe for indoor use due to its non-evaporative properties. There's virtually no odor.
It softens almost any finish in 30-60 minutes, even if there are multiple coats — even if it's a catalytic-conversion varnish. SoyGel strips furniture, cabinetry, flooring, molding, doors, windows, stairs, balusters and handrails. Do not use on plastic, PVC or sheet rock (drywall).
Why we like it
This is one of our most popular products because it works fast, has no toxic fumes and strips paint — and many other finishes — very easily. Try out a quart and you'll want more.
Features & benefits
- Powerful — three times the strength of traditional strippers
- Quick results — 30-60 minutes will usually remove multiple coats of paint, lacquer, acrylic, epoxy or enamel finishes
- Easy-to-use — simply spread, wait for finish to soften and then scrape off; follow with cleaner/degreaser
- Versatile — use on wood, brick, stone, metal, plaster, concrete and many other surfaces; works well on old stiff paint brushes; NOT to be used on plastic, PVC or sheet rock (drywall)
- Removes lead paint — contact a certified contractor or your local sanitation service to determine where and how to dispose of it
- Non-toxic — non-corrosive to skin; no hazardous ingredients
- Safe — for everyone, preferred by the chemically sensitive; learn how to test a non-toxic product for tolerance
- Eco-friendly — extremely low VOC; biodegradable
Alert: In the spirit of transparency, the manufacturer states on its label: "Warning, this product contains a chemical (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, NMP) known to the state of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm" According to the manufacturer of SoyGel, there has been a study in California which applied NMP at 100% strength on pregnant rodents for a month, with frequent re-applications to make sure it was still on their skin. The test resulted in smaller size babies. No tests have been conducted on the 40-45% strength used in SoyGel, as requested by the manufacturer. Of course there are no tests on humans. Although the warning for NMP is required only by the State of California, the manufacturer has chosen to include the warning on product sold in all 50 states

Having sold this product since 2000, our experience has shown it to be an excellent product that performs well and produces no nasty odors or unwanted physical discomfort; it is not caustic. But as with all products, be sure to comply with the manufacturers instructions.
Please follow the recommendation to wear goggles and neoprene gloves. Also the bottle says to avoid eye contact, to keep out of reach of children and to refer to the MSDS prior to use. MSDS-Material Safety Data Sheet
Note: Although SoyGel does remove some urethanes there is a product made specifically for removal of polyurethanes. It is called Poly U. Click on the link to go to the product.
APPLICATION STEPS:
1) Apply a thick even layer of SoyGel to the coating you wish to remove.
2) Let it set. (The longer the better)
3) Check the progress of the stripping action by using a scraper to see if the coating is softened down to the surface. If not, wait longer and recheck.
4) Once the coating is softened, remove it with a scraper, industrial wet vacuum, or other stripping tool.
5) (Repeat the steps above if necessary)
CLEAN UP: Clean the remaining thin residue with water, using a scrub brush and/or mop or power washer. Be sure to scrape or vacuum excess removed coating and SoyGel before using a power washer for final cleaning. Allow surface to dry before further preparations.
Some good cleaner/degreasers: HydroxiPro concentrate, AFM SafeChoice SuperClean

| Application Temperature Range | warmer than 55 ° f |
| Application Instructions | Apply a thick, even layer of SOYGel, generally between 1/16 and 1/8 inch-the coating-be removed by using pouring, brushing, or airless sprayer (piston pumped with tip of 519 or similar). If applying with brush, do not apply as you would paint. Don't brush or scrape the surface until the stripper has had time-work. Check the progress of the stripping action by using a scraper-see if the coating is softened down-the surface. If not, wait longer and recheck. SOY-Gel will remain wet and working for several hours. Longer is better. Let the stripper do the work. If SOY-Gel is left-sit outdoors, cover with a light plastic drop cloth-prolong the stripper's wet time. Once the coating is softened, remove it with a scraper, industrial wet vacuum, or other stripping tool. Reapply stripper, if necessary. Repeat steps above. After use, clean remaining thin residue with Franmar's EMERGE or water, using a scrub brush and/or mop or power washer. Ensure-scrape or vacuum excess removed coating and SOY-Gel before using a power washer for final cleaning. Always use care-prevent over spray from getting on surfaces other than the one being prepped. Allow surface-dry before further preparations. Pour, brush, spray, then scrape off with metal scraper, industrial wet vacuum or other stripping tool. After use, use brush, mop or powerwasher-clean. |
