Bioshield, Earth Pigments

Natural color pigments from the earth
Bioshield Earth Pigments are water-soluable and oil-soluble powders made from earth and mineral bases. They're a natural alternative to paint tints which add visual texture and create outstanding effects when used with Bioshield Wall Glaze, Clay Paint and Aqua Resin Stain Finish.
NOTE: Because Earth Pigments are derived from natural earthen and mineral bases, colors may vary from batch to batch and a consistent color hue cannot always be guaranteed. The Spinell & Ultramarine colors have more consistency than the Italian Earth Pigments. Sample kits are available.
Why we like it
These mineral pigments are right out of the ground, all-natural, potent and very colorful. They're a pleasure to work with but require some skill to get just the right color. Always test with small quantities as you can always add more.
We suggest that you strain with a fine strainer prior to use to get rid of any large chunks. We also suggest making extra large batches so there's some left over for future touch ups.

"Bio-Shield Pigments
Pigments are best used in the following products:
Water-based products: Casein Milk Paint (10) & Wall Glaze (15). BioShield Solvent-Free Wall Paint (181) has a high degree of titanium white and is suitable only for making light shades of paint.
Oil-based products: Resin & Oil Finish (3), Natural Resin Floor Finish (4/44), High Solid Wood Stain (7). Our Oil Enamel Paints are only suitable for making light shades of paint. Due to their formulation we do not recommend tinting our Oil Finishes (1), (5), and (9), or our Waxes (30) and (32).
Mixing Pigments with Water-Based Materials:
For Casein Paint (10), Wall Paint (18), Wall Glaze (15), and other water-based products, create a paste by mixing pigments with a small amount of water. Depending on the pigment, we recommend a soaking time of 15 to 30 minutes. Stir contents again and add more water if needed. The consistency of this pigment and water mixture should be a light paste without lumps or pockets of dry pigments. Mix paste with material to form a homogenous color.
Mixing Pigments with Oil-Based Materials:
Use oil instead of water and procedd as under "Mixing Pigments with Water-Based Materials".
Tips and Techniques for Working with BioShield Pigments
All pigments have different pigmentation (coloring) intensity. This means that no standard recipes can be provided.
For instance, much more Veronese Green will be needed to come close to the original color than Bottle Green or Meadow Green.
Pigments will also differ in their coloring effect when using the various bases.
For instance a color will best show when mixed into our Wall Glaze (15), and will show with less intensity when mixed into BioShield Oil Enamel Paints. The more white a base contains, the lower will be the tinting effect of a pigment. A white base always will show a 'milky' version of the original pigment color, less white will show a color more true to the original pigment color.
For those customers who are not familiar with pigments, we recommend testing in small batches before mixing the entire amount of pigment into the base. This will show a preliminary result and enable you to make corrections without spoiling the entire batch.
Caution: Avoid contact with clothing. Certain pigments may permanently stain fabrics.
