DIY money-saving home power monitor
The PowerCost Monitor provides real-time feedback about a home's energy use in dollars or kWh, changes in usage, 30-day energy-use estimates, cumulative information (hourly, daily, weekly, etc.); it also shows the time and outside temperature. Unlike some home-energy monitors, installation does not require an electrician; it can be set up by anyone within 15 minutes.
The PowerCost Monitor uses a wireless sensor that easily attaches to the home's electric meter; this sensor provides information to an attractive countertop power monitor. When current utility rates are entered into the power monitor, the unit calculates the usage based on readings from the meter.
This monitor can be conveniently placed anywhere up to 100 feet from the sensor unit, allowing it to always be seen in the kitchen, on the night stand or on the wall in the hallway.
An excellent upgrade, the PowerCost Monitor WiFi Gateway, is available that feeds data to a computer for study and analysis. The monitor and the gateway may be purchased together as the PowerCost Monitor & WiFi Gateway Bundle.
Why we like it
Most people have no direct association between flipping a switch or pushing a button and how much more money is being spent on electricity. However, when this information is readily available, something as small as leaving the light on in the basement when no one's down there becomes inspiration to change wasteful habits and decisions. Something like seeing the spike on the monitor when an old refrigerator kicks in really begs for an upgrade to a more efficient model.
There's no better motivator to turn off lights or shorten a wash cycle than watching your money needlessly go down the drain second by second. You'll be amazed once you see how many energy hogs there are in your home and how easy it is to reduce or replace them.
